On my 60th birthday..

Ready to return to the Sierra -tomorrow-?

I’ve already had the pleasure of a phone call from my friend Wa, and my mother who’s recovering from a knee replacement. Many friends have written on FB, thanks!

Today, I’ll continue editing my rough cut for the newest documentary BACKPACKING AND MOUNTAINEERING IN THE SIERRA NEVADA (BMSN) and will be adding some music. I’ve selected excerpts from Ken Burn’s LEWIS AND CLARK: THE JOURNEY OF THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY and from W. Snuffy Walden’s score for THE STAND.

Here’s a shot of my loaded Black Diamond Predator 50 from last night’s training hike

Please take a look, if you’re exploring your options for participating in this wonderful sport!
I will amend it over time as my needs may change….

Enjoy!

Enjoyed returning to the Bear Creek Spire area of Little Lakes Valley, eastern Sierra

We shot video and stills in the wonderful setting of 13,000 foot peaks and many lakes, including a great high camp above a lake facing south toward the Spire. I did a segment with 2 crew members on basic alpine mountaineering, and we had a chance to do timelapse scenes in the evening.

In late October-November we’ll plan to head to the west side in SEKI (Sequoia/Kings Canyon,) and then do some snow camping and possibly an alpine climb in the Spire region in Nov-December to finish shooting for the documentary.

Special thanks to Ross Rivera and Joann Loo, for the nice job shooting video in the field.

We’ll be in the Little Lakes Valley area south of Tom’s Place, between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, from 2-4 September. No one else on my crew has been to the area, it’s exciting to be the one to introduce them to it!

One of my very favorite peaks in the range is located there-Bear Creek Spire (c 13,700′).Hope to get some of them to try at least a ridge route on it….

In November the plan is to return there, to shoot in winter conditions.

Backpacking in the Sierra Nevada for 3 days next week

Posted in Photography, Reviews, Travel, Video on June 17, 2012 by William Hooks

We will be traveling as a group of seven, heading initially to Yosemite NP on Monday morning to see if we can get a walk-in permit for Happy Isles to Little Yo Valley. If not, south to Kings Canyon or Sequoia NP’s to try to get in there… I plan to begin shooting for my next adventure sports documentary on backpacking and mountaineering on this trip.

My production group will be using Adobe Creative Suite 6 Master Edition for impending projects- we’re anxious to see if the newest version of Encore is more reliable than was version 5.1!

REI, Adventure 16 and Nomad Venture stores in southern CA will be showing the posters from RIDDLE OF MONZONITE, and I anticipate screenings of it this July-Sept in several stores.

Returning to Joshua Tree NP for, additional climbing and documentary shooting

Posted in Photography, Reviews, Travel, Video on May 20, 2012 by William Hooks

I spotted what appeared to be an outstanding route with an easy approach on the northeast aspect of Chimney Rock in JT last week, and plan to return there to climb next Wednesday with some crew. We’ll shoot more takes for a special effect I want in the piece, as well as HDR and timelapses.

My videography and photo equipment has held up very well in the heat and taken the abuse out there, with the exception of 2 older light stands which were destroyed by fractures of the aluminum tubes near the mounting ends. I suspect that was due to twisting (torsional) stress while repeatedly positioning and adjusting them.
