>A day of preparing

Posted in Captain's Personal Log on February 9, 2011 by William Hooks

>Preparing to perhaps do a snow shelter workshop during the 3 -day weekend after I go back to work, with Charles et al or maybe in the So CA area, preparations re Radisphere El Centro hospital job essentially completed, try to head to REI tonight. Monika expressed interest in maybe going to JT that weekend as well to do photography.

Beautiful day. I feel much better after a somewhat restful Wednesday, although had a fair right leg cramp this morning. I updated my igloo database file to include the selection of snow saws I use.

A little stiff after snow visit yesterday, and began by making a few job search calls and sharing a few jokes with Bob Benson at San Dimas Hospital.

Sent video clips for the first time to Facebook last PM and this morning.. going to re-study my SNOW SHELTERS text from 1993, probably get the car serviced, and sort snow gear before the REI snow camping presentation tonight.

I wish George Reyes the best searching for a job at Whittier. He seems pretty unhappy at El Centro/Brawley.

It was great fun to have so much excitement over my recent HDR prints from recent alley shoot.

I had a great few hours at Long Valley, above the Mountain Station this afternoon. Made several video clips and shot stills while building a quick solo snow shelter (did not finish it). The snow was generally very hard, almost bulletproof… I tried both the new Yang Fang and the Bone saw, which is much sharper but a much thinner blade and shorter than the YF.  Nice to be reminded that the phones up there can connect me with international folks, and that my cell works there. I picked up lunch and dinner menus from the Peaks restaurant.

Called George Reyes this evening before heading to the studio, maybe visit Brawley later this week?

I accomplished a great deal today toward my job search, including reconnecting with a practice based in Glendora. Slept well. Grant had his day in court over custody of my grandson, Kendell… we’ll see where that goes.

My new high-tech Wang Fang snow saw arrived and I’m excited to experiment with it this week for making snow shelters. Also, reconnected with Scott Dordick and his son, Sam at the new fab facility in Pomona and perhaps we’ll head out soon to shoot in the field. I may even do video of Scott for Acratech infomercials and in the process, maybe liven them up ?Chill tonight, then go to the studio tomorrow evening and get the CR-V serviced probably the next day. REI has an upcoming program on winter camping at Cucamonga on Wednesday.

>Heading out to see the film before settling into camp. I’ve never done canyoneering and I imagine that there will be a college education in this movie….

Nice evening. If time permits, perhaps some postprocessing later. Tomorrow, make some calls to practices  and stop to see Scott Dordick if he’s around, will my new snow saw arrive yet? And get a trim. Good to hear KPFK 90.7 FM  live when I’m in town, too.

>Sleepy on a hot February day

>Most everything I want to accomplish today is finished, including a studio shoot of Erica with black velvet support for tattoo images, talking with Midi, showing 3 HDR prints, and preps for desert camp.

I’m pretty tired, it’s time for R&R……………… I’m glad not to be a Super Bowl fan this afternoon.

Much accomplished on the first day of the weekend yesterday, especially with printing and preparing to show RAW files to compare with processed images- for the first time I plan to attend the tweak session on a Sunday at TCSP, since I won’t be there next Saturday.

Then, it’s on to the backcountry whether PS Aerial Tramway or JTNP- and stops along the way; perhaps REI has the new regulator Jetboil?

I hope so much that Grant is able to retain custody of my grandson Kendell this week in court…. my distrust of attorneys and the legal system is nagging me.

>Saturday begins to wane

>This evening will be devoted to printing HDR shots from the portraits done today, and learning about the coroner-medical examiner issues in a FRONTLINE documentary on PBS- then what I call Preparation H:
getting ready for another 2 day camp/shoot and rock climb in Joshua Tree National Park, CA.

I’m going to be conducting a job search this week, as my contract with Mineral King Radiology in Visalia ends in May 2011. Already interviewed yesterday with a nearby group at Tulare Regional Medical Center, where I had been offered a position in 2009. I may end up returning to southern CA to work later this year…
meanwhile, next Sat and Sunday there will be the annual rad meeting at Pasadena Convention Center for LA Radiological Society which I ‘ll attend.

The DEFIANT is in synchronous orbit around the third planet from a nearby yellow mid-class star known locally as Sol- the sun. This is my inaugural log entry from this sector.

My name is William Hooks, also known as the Emissary of Bajor- Benjamin Lafayette Sisko, from STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE as my alter-ego.

When I’m not in the backcountry or doing photography, I practice radiology. Today I’m starting another week of vacation and have entered an HDR image from a shoot in West Covina this morning.

For a look at some of my other images, go to ModelMayhem.com (my ID# is 556396) and to my Facebook page.

I don’t always drink beer. But when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

Stay thirsty, my friends.
