>Egypt and Mubarak go their separate ways

Another very warm day here, running errands and then preparing my garage and office for a lot of additional gear to be moved from Visalia in coming weeks. I’m going to try to avoid adding any items for the next several months at least, due to very limited space as well as good practice.

Tomorrow I will attempt to reconnect and network with practices during my job search, at the Pasadena rad meeting- and stay awake long enough to do it.

My preparations for returning to the snow to build shelters are complete.

>Reflections in the water- pondering the legacy of the great mezzo soprano Barbara Smith Conrad, who was threatened with death for wiinning the role of Dido in her first opera at U Texas Austin in 1957 and 52 years later, was honored as a distinguished alumnus and invited to sing at the Texas State Legislature building….

Her story was portrayed in the PBS documentary I just enjoyed, WHEN I RISE. If someone were to ask me to recommend a piece to include as mandatory viewing for the education of those who come after us,this film would be on my short list. With luck, someday I will be able to share it with my own children if all 3 are ever in the same place at once.

>Captain’s Log, Stardate 201102.10

Sunny, like early summer in February. Egypt is in chaos. Here, I’m bored enough to stay inside at this screen during the afternoon… partly completed the work to upload my Lightroom Web Gallery to the internet, but no successful actual upload yet. Hopefully Grant can assist sometime soon.

I may try to shoot some more images for my alpine/snow slideshow. Then another evening at the Crypt… but it’s nice to rest, I must say that it’s needed.

>A day of preparing

Posted in Captain's Personal Log on February 9, 2011 by William Hooks

>Preparing to perhaps do a snow shelter workshop during the 3 -day weekend after I go back to work, with Charles et al or maybe in the So CA area, preparations re Radisphere El Centro hospital job essentially completed, try to head to REI tonight. Monika expressed interest in maybe going to JT that weekend as well to do photography.

Beautiful day. I feel much better after a somewhat restful Wednesday, although had a fair right leg cramp this morning. I updated my igloo database file to include the selection of snow saws I use.

>Captain’s Log, Stardate 201102.9

A little stiff after snow visit yesterday, and began by making a few job search calls and sharing a few jokes with Bob Benson at San Dimas Hospital.

Sent video clips for the first time to Facebook last PM and this morning.. going to re-study my SNOW SHELTERS text from 1993, probably get the car serviced, and sort snow gear before the REI snow camping presentation tonight.

I wish George Reyes the best searching for a job at Whittier. He seems pretty unhappy at El Centro/Brawley.

It was great fun to have so much excitement over my recent HDR prints from recent alley shoot.

I had a great few hours at Long Valley, above the Mountain Station this afternoon. Made several video clips and shot stills while building a quick solo snow shelter (did not finish it). The snow was generally very hard, almost bulletproof… I tried both the new Yang Fang and the Bone saw, which is much sharper but a much thinner blade and shorter than the YF.  Nice to be reminded that the phones up there can connect me with international folks, and that my cell works there. I picked up lunch and dinner menus from the Peaks restaurant.

Called George Reyes this evening before heading to the studio, maybe visit Brawley later this week?

I accomplished a great deal today toward my job search, including reconnecting with a practice based in Glendora. Slept well. Grant had his day in court over custody of my grandson, Kendell… we’ll see where that goes.

My new high-tech Wang Fang snow saw arrived and I’m excited to experiment with it this week for making snow shelters. Also, reconnected with Scott Dordick and his son, Sam at the new fab facility in Pomona and perhaps we’ll head out soon to shoot in the field. I may even do video of Scott for Acratech infomercials and in the process, maybe liven them up ?Chill tonight, then go to the studio tomorrow evening and get the CR-V serviced probably the next day. REI has an upcoming program on winter camping at Cucamonga on Wednesday.

>Heading out to see the film before settling into camp. I’ve never done canyoneering and I imagine that there will be a college education in this movie….

Nice evening. If time permits, perhaps some postprocessing later. Tomorrow, make some calls to practices  and stop to see Scott Dordick if he’s around, will my new snow saw arrive yet? And get a trim. Good to hear KPFK 90.7 FM  live when I’m in town, too.

>Most everything I want to accomplish today is finished, including a studio shoot of Erica with black velvet support for tattoo images, talking with Midi, showing 3 HDR prints, and preps for desert camp.

I’m pretty tired, it’s time for R&R……………… I’m glad not to be a Super Bowl fan this afternoon.
