Updates to my 3 season lightweight backpacking gear list

You’ll notice that the base weight carried is now approx 7 pounds in a Hyperlight Mountain Gear Windrider 2400, with removal of its 2 aluminum stays. I ‘m usually not using them if carrying less than about 15-17 pounds total pack weight incl food, fuel, and water. Again- if I need a 5 deg sleeping bag, 2 axes, and/or much more food and fuel, the ULA Catalyst pack comes out. If I just need moderately more carrying capacity, the ULA Circuit or HMG Windrider 3400 is the ticket.

In 2018, I plan to begin exploring the addition of packrafting to my wilderness travels and might start experimenting with open fires for cooking- but with careful attention to the fact that uncontrolled fires have been a major problem in California for many recent seasons…..and along that thought: be careful when planning to use alcohol stoves in California. I generally will bring a gas stove with me as an option unless absolutely sure that alcohol is both legal and reasonable for a given trip.

I’ve added a titanium 1 oz Vargo Triad alcohol stove to my cooking options.

The HMG 8.5 x 8.5 ft cuben fiber tarp has been a wonderful new addition to my list. A comprehensive review of this shelter is one of my upcoming projects.
